SAINT OF THE DAY SEPTEMBER 08, 2021

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Church began its commemoration as early as the 5th century. No one is certain where Mary was born, but two traditions have survived from ancient times, one naming Nazareth and the other, Jerusalem. The feast celebrates Mary’s personal sanctity and vocation as the mother of Jesus. According to Protoevangelium of James Anna and Joachim are infertile but pray for a child. They receive the promise of a child who will advance God’s plan of salvation for the world. The story stresses the special presence of God in Mary’s life and Augustine says: “She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley.”
