Saint John of Kanty
John was born in Kanty, Poland, in 1390. After his ordination, he served in the Faculty of Theology at Krakow University teaching theology, scripture and science. He was known to be caring towards his students. A popular teacher and preacher, John was noted for his simplicity and love for the poor. His charity towards the poor of Krakow, his generosity towards everyone he met, his love of learning and his devotion to his ministry as a priest have made him a beloved saint in Poland. He died in 1473 and was canonized in 1767. Pope John Paul II was inspired by his example, saying “Knowledge and wisdom seek a covenant with holiness.”
REFLECTION
stand up and raise your heads. Luke 21:28
For those who are facing difficulties or grieving the loss of a loved one, the Christmas season can cause them to be especially forlorn. It’s easy for us to get caught up in last-minute errands and expectations. But when you take a break from that to-do list, ask yourself this question: Who is finding this season too much to bear? It’s an inconvenient question at an inconvenient time. But suffering and grief take no holiday. Are you willing to be a light in their darkness? A phone call, a willingness to listen, a kind gesture to those who are suffering—all can be precious gifts that require no wrapping paper. As we prepare to celebrate our Savior’s birth, let us do so by bringing his gifts of love and hope to those most in need of them.
